My office uses LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Both are compatible with Microsoft Office and both are free. I personally use LibreOffice and soon will be converting the other computers here to LibreOffice. It seems to me that the development of LibreOffice is ahead of OpenOffice.
So, if you want a Microsoft compatible office suite I recommend LibreOffice. It is free to download and use… but if you are able I recommend you donate what you can to keep this project going.
Like LibreOffice, OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.
AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft® Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks.
AbiWord allows you to collaborate with multiple people on one document at the same time. It is tightly integrated with the AbiCollab.net web service, which lets you store documents online, allows easy document sharing with your friends, and performs format conversions on the fly.
The Gnumeric spreadsheet is part of the GNOME desktop environment: a project to create a free, user friendly desktop environment.
The goal of Gnumeric is to be the best possible spreadsheet. We are not attempting to clone existing applications. However, Gnumeric can read files saved with other spreadsheets and we offer a customizable feel that attempts to minimize the costs of transition.
